Powerful Blast Near Red Fort

A powerful explosion shook the area surrounding the historic Red Fort in New Delhi late Monday evening, leaving several people injured and triggering panic among locals and tourists. The blast occurred around 7:45 p.m. near the Lahori Gate entrance, a busy spot known for its markets and eateries.

Police and fire services rushed to the scene, evacuating the monument and cordoning off the area. Early reports indicate that the explosion was caused by a suspected improvised explosive device (IED). NDTV

Casualties and Damage

According to official sources, at least six people were killed and over twenty were injured, including tourists and local vendors. Several of the injured remain in critical condition at Lok Nayak Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre.

The impact of the blast damaged nearby vehicles, food stalls, and parts of the boundary wall near the fort. Emergency teams worked through the night to rescue victims and clear debris. The Delhi Fire Service confirmed that no secondary explosives were found at the site during their inspection.

Eyewitness Accounts

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. “The ground shook, and we heard a massive blast followed by smoke and screams,” said a local vendor. Emergency teams transported the injured to Lok Nayak Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.

People in the vicinity described a terrifying scene. “The blast was so loud that the ground trembled. Within seconds, smoke filled the air, and everyone started running,” said Ramesh Gupta, a shopkeeper near Lahori Gate.

Police and paramedics arrived quickly, assisting victims and sealing the area to prevent further panic. Drone surveillance and sniffer dogs were deployed to ensure the area was secure.

Official Response and Investigation

Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora confirmed that the Special Cell and forensic teams are examining the blast site. “We suspect the use of an IED, but confirmation will come after lab tests,” he stated.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has joined the probe. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a detailed report and instructed agencies to “bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern, saying, “Delhi will not bow to terror. The people of India stand strong and united.”

Nationwide Security Tightened

In response to the blast, the government has heightened security at major landmarks including Parliament House, India Gate, and major metro stations. Across India, tourist sites like the Taj Mahal and Qutub Minar are under intensified surveillance.

Possible Terror Links

So far, no organization has claimed responsibility. However, intelligence inputs had previously warned of possible attacks on high-profile historical sites. Investigators have reportedly recovered metallic fragments and traces of ammonium nitrate — common materials used in IEDs.

“We are studying CCTV footage and mobile data from the last 72 hours,” said an NIA official. “No angle is being ruled out at this stage.”

Public Reaction and Global Condemnation

Citizens have taken to social media expressing grief and anger, urging stronger counter-terrorism measures. The United Nations, the United States, and several other countries have condemned the attack and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

Symbol of Strength and Resilience

The Red Fort is not only a heritage monument but also a national symbol from where the Prime Minister addresses the nation on Independence Day. The attack is being seen as an attempt to strike at India’s pride and peace.

Yet, as Delhi stands in shock, the nation’s resilience remains firm. Citizens, security forces, and leaders across party lines have united in their resolve to defeat terrorism.
